photoinfo

Whenever I took photos with my digital camera. I find it hard to include additional details (metadata) such as description of the picture, where I captured the photos and etc. Recently, I found a free tool that allows me to modify metadata on my photos with ease.

Photo Info from Microsoft is a utility to modify metadata on digital photos. Once installed, you can access Photo Info by right-click on the photo or multiple photos (to be edited as collection) that you want to edit and select Photo Info option.

You can even generate copyright notice automatically and access loads of features. Place your mouse over any digital photo and a tooltip detailing photo information will be display on screen.

This is certainly a great tool for anyone how needs a free tool to modify their photos details.

Replacing Ms Paint

MS Paint

Microsoft Paint is a graphic utility tool that pre-installed with Microsoft operating system, including Windows XP and Windows Vista. Ironically, although Windows Vista has lots of improvement in terms of GUI (graphic user interface), however, the MS Paint has been the same as long as I can remember. It really sucks, if you want to add effects on your artwork.

Ok, maybe there are some improvement on Ms Paint in Vista, like ability to crop pictures and additional Undo level up to 10 from 3. Emm… no significant improvement, in my opinion.

Good news is there is a great MS Paint replacement available and it’s free and it’s called Paint.Net. The main guy behind Paint.Net is Rick Brewster, a Software Design Engineer at Microsoft. Its small size file (approx. 1.5 MB) with free source code available really makes this a great alternative to the pre-installed Paint. However, you need Ms .Net Framework 2.0 to run this application.

Some cool features in Paint.Net are:

  • Layers
  • Easy to use
  • Special effects
  • Support plugins
  • and best of all, open-source and free

Check out below screenshots from Paint.Net

Perhaps, Microsoft should include Paint.Net on their next upgrade to replace old Ms Paint.

Alternative

If you are looking for alternative open-source digital photo editing tool, you may want to check GIMP. Not as great as Adobe Photoshop, but it’s worth to try it out. Besides, it supports various OS.
