Stop Bugging Me

If you are using Windows Update to periodically download and install latest patch, you might encountered an annoying window that prompts you to restart your computer once new updates installed. It will keep on bugging you until your computer is restarted. Clicking Restart Later is only good for a few minutes before the restart window pops up again.

restart pc

There are a few ways to disable or stop the popup.

  • Modify Registry as shown here and here
  • Modify group policy via gpedit.msc command to change the time interval as shown here
  • Another way is to stop the service that runs Windows Auto Update. Hence, I have written a small program in VB.Net that will temporary stop the Auto Update service (that prompts auto restart window). This service will start automatically once the computer finally restarted. So, you can do your work without the having to deal with the nagging prompt. :)
