Shortcut Keys for Better Browsing

These days, people are spending more time surfing online, be it for work, research, entertainment, downloading pirated movies or keeping in touch with friends and peers. It is undeniable that, today, for some, Internet is part of their lives or maybe it IS your life if you are making a living with it like Liew or Darren and many others.

This post, I compile a list of shortcut keys for both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer that will enhance your surfing experience. Some shortcut keys are commonly known but you may some keys that you never thought it existed.

** All shortcut keys have been test on Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 7. May not work on older versions. **

All shortcut keys are categorized as below:

Common Shortcut Keys for both Firefox and IE

  • Bookmark Current Page / Add Favorites
    • Ctrl + D
  • Toggle full screen mode
    • F11
  • Open history panel
    • Ctrl + H
  • Open bookmark panel
    • Ctrl + I or Ctrl + B
  • Place focus on address bar
    • Ctrl + L or F6
  • Open new tab on browser and place focus on the address bar
    • Ctrl + T
  • Cycles through all tabs on browser
    • Ctrl + Tab (for version that support tabs browsing)
  • Increase or decrease font size to improve text readability
    • Ctrl + (plus or minus)
  • Refresh page
    • Ctrl + R or F5
  • Close tab
    • Ctrl + W
  • Close browser
    • Alt + F4
  • Place focus on search field
    • Ctrl + E
  • Drop down address bar list
    • F4
  • Open exact tab #
    • Ctrl + (1 to 8).
    • example, Ctrl + 2, will open tab 2 on the browser
  • Open last tab on browser
    • Ctrl + 9
  • Open new window
    • Ctrl + N
  • Open file
    • Ctrl + O
  • Save page as
    • Ctrl + S
  • Print page
    • Ctrl + P
  • Find
    • F3 or Ctrl + F
  • Select All
    • Ctrl + A
  • Cut
    • Ctrl + X
  • Copy
    • Ctrl + C
  • Paste
    • Ctrl + V
  • Open help file
    • F1

FireFox

  1. Open download manager
    • Ctrl + J
  2. View source on current page
    • Ctrl + U
  3. Bookmark all tabs
    • Ctrl + Shift + D
  4. Clear private data
    • Ctrl + Shift + Del
  5. Place focus on search field
    • Ctrl + K
  6. Close browser
    • Ctrl + Shift + W

    For both browsers: CTRL + F4 = Close tab..

    Btw, this one, and many of the other shortcuts for both browsers can be used systemwide… :)
